Monsoon has arrived, and this is the season of the blood suckers, (not vampires) the leeches. Here are a few tips to keep them away or get rid of them:
- If you are going on short treks or jungle walks, then it is wise to wear Leech socks. Leech socks are knee length socks that make it hard for leeches to reach your skin.
- Salt can keep leeches at bay. When you cant wear Leech socks, keep a pack of table salt with you. Wet some salt and apply it on your skin, leeches avoid salty skin.
- Snuff is another weapon against leeches, snuff smells but sprinkling a little in your shoes discourages leeches.
- Calcium carbonate (limestone) in the form available locally in India (kannada: ಸುಣ್ಣ, telugu: సున్నము) is a good agent. find a leach on you? just touch a little bit of it on the leach to get rid of it.
- Surprisingly, Baby Lotion, or some moisturising lotion can come handy too, it worked for me. If you find a leech hooked to your skin, just use a drop of lotion on the leech to experience instant release.
